Colors In Cree
The main colors in Cree are:
- Red – Mihkwāw
- Blue – Sīpihkwāw
- Green – Askihtakwāw
- Yellow – Wāposāwāw
- Black – Kaskitēwāw
- White – Wāpiskāw
- Gray – Pihkonākwan
- Orange – Osāwāw
- Purple – Nīpāmāyātān
- Pink – Wāpikwanīwinākwan
- Brown – Kaskitewosāwāw
The above colors can be used to describe inanimate objects.
In Cree, if the noun you are describing is plural then the color needs to be in plural form as well.
To make the above colors plural, just add an ‘a’ onto the end of them.
Exception:
For pink and purple, add ‘wa’ onto the end instead to make them plural.
Animate Objects
If you want to describe an animate object, use the following variations instead:
- Red – Mihkosiw
- Blue – Sīpihkosiw
- Green – Askihtakosiw
- Yellow – Wāposāwisiw
- Black – Kaskitēsiw
- White – Wāpiskisiw
- Gray – Pihkonākosiw
- Orange – Osāwisiw
- Purple – Nīpāmāyātisiw
- Pink – Wāpikwanīwinākosiw
- Brown – Kaskitewosāwisiw
Again, if you’re describing a plural noun then the color needs to be in the plural form too.
Simply add ‘ak’ onto the end of the colors to make them plural.
Shades of Colors in Cree
To describe different shades of colors in Cree, you can use the following words:
- Light – Wāpi
- Dark – Kaskitē
Simply place the word for light or dark before the color to indicate that it is either dark or light.
