There are several colors that do not have a direct translation into Tagalog. 

Over the years, Tagalog speakers began using the word color, which is kulay, and then following this with an item that is commonly associated with that color.

Here are some examples and explanations:

  • Gray – Kulay abo (literally ‘the color of ash’)
  • Orange – Kulay dalandan (literally ‘the color of an orange’)
  • Purple – Kulay ube (literally ‘the color of a purple yam’)
  • Brown – Kulay tsokolate (literally ‘the color of chocolate’)

Today people often drop the ‘kulay’ part so you will commonly hear just ube for purple and dalandan for orange.

Spanish Influence

Many of the Tagalog words used for colors actually originate from the Spanish words.
