- In Iran, the week begins on Saturday and ends on Friday. Friday and Saturday are the weekend days in Iran.
- The word for Saturday (شنبه or shanbeh) is also often translated to ‘sabbath’ which is traditionally a day of rest (in most countries Sunday is the sabbath).
- Most of the names for the days of the week are formed by adding a cardinal number to the word for Saturday (which is شنبه or shanbeh) as Saturday is the first day of the week.
- For example, Sunday is essentially called ‘one Saturday’ and Monday is ‘two Saturday’ and so on.
- The only exception is Friday. The word جمعه or ‘jomeh’ comes from Arabic and signifies Friday’s role as a day for prayer.
