Does Duolingo Have Māori In 2023? + Alternatives

If you’re looking to learn Māori then you may be wondering if the popular language learning platform Duolingo has a Māori course.

Summary:

  • Duolingo does NOT have a Maori Course 😔

Does Duolingo Have A Māori Course?

Duolingo doesn’t currently have a Māori course available for learning, however they’ve stated in the past that they’re working on one. (This post was last updated April 2023)

Māori is a fascinating language with a long and rich history. Today it is spoken by approximately 125,000 people, mainly in New Zealand.

Many people who are looking to learn a new language use Duolingo, a fun language learning platform that features bite-size lessons on various languages.

Duolingo is known to be a fun, free and easy way to learn a new language.

When Will Māori Be Available On Duolingo?

The Duolingo Incubator was a feature where you could see what languages Duolingo were currently working on.

But they’ve removed the incubator completely now.

Instead they just have a page for all language courses.

When you go on that page for all language courses Maori is nowhere to be seen.

The Duolingo courses used to be created by volunteers in the past.

You could contribute to a course on the Duolingo Incubator page if you’re fluent in more than one language.

Obviously this is not the case anymore as the incubator is gone.

There was a Maori course that was on the incubator page and the planned release was February 2021.

And yes, it’s now 2023, so I don’t think a Maori course is coming out anytime soon on Duolingo 😂.

I did find another landing page for Maori on Duolingo but it also looks really out of date.

When you go to the Maori Duoling landing page it says to join the waitlist and still says it’s being released February 2021.

Obviously that’s not happening, and it kinda looks like Duolingo has just forgotten about this page.

Alternatives To Duolingo To Learn Māori

Whilst Duolingo is a fantastic resource for learning a new language, you don’t have to wait around for them to complete the course to start learning Māori.

There are plenty of fantastic courses out there for learning Māori – both free and paid.

Paid Alternatives For Learning Māori

Māori Textbook

If you’re looking for a standard textbook to help you with Māori then the Let’s Learn Maori book is one of the best out there.

It’s a great reference point and explains the language in clear, easy to understand terms. It covers a range of useful vocabulary, phrases and grammar in Māori.

I’d also recommend getting an English – Māori dictionary to expand your vocabulary and look up new words.

uTalk

The online platform uTalk offers a Māori course

They focus on game-based learning and state that their course uses native speakers and features more than 2,500 everyday words.

The course will teach you a range of relevant Māori vocabulary and get you speaking the language straight away.

Free Alternatives For Learning Māori

Memrise

Memrise is an online language learning app that uses fun games to help its users learn their chosen language.

They have tons of free Māori courses that will teach you the alphabet, vocabulary and phrases in Māori.

It’s really interactive and gradually introduces new words slowly so you have time to consolidate them all. There’s also plenty of opportunities to practice what you’ve learnt.

Drops

Another great resource for learning Māori is the language app ‘Drops’.

The app focuses on building up your vocabulary and features a range of fun vocabulary lists including food, numbers, weather, health, transport and so much more.

The lessons are fun and immersive, you’ll learn lots of new vocabulary and the app uses visual associations to help you learn new words.

Drops states their course will teach you 2,000+ Māori words.

You can use the app for 5 minutes a day for free (you do have to pay for unlimited access).

Thanks for reading this post on whether Duolingo currently has a Māori course.

Even though Duolingo doesn’t currently have a Māori course available for learning, there are still lots of other ways that you can learn Māori.
