Birthday traditions can be very important to many people on their birthdays. To make your loved one feel extra special you can also learn about some of these Afghanistan birthday traditions.

Birthdays are not a big deal

Birthdays aren’t actually big events in Afghanistan. Interestingly, many Afghani people don’t actually know their exact age or date of birth as birthdays are not a big deal here.

Everybody’s birthday is January 1st

Additionally, if you ask an Afghani when their birthday is, many will say it’s January 1st.

This is mainly due to the fact that years ago, in the 80s and 90s, the government didn’t have a system of registering births and IDs/driver’s licenses weren’t a thing. This meant that a lot of people didn’t know their date of birth and families didn’t really see a reason to record the date.

Later on, birth dates became more important for documents and so most people who didn’t know their date of birth selected Jan 1st.

This collective birthday has become a sort of inside joke within the Afghani community and many like to celebrate this joint birthday on Jan 1st every year.
