Kazakhstan Birthday Traditions

Birthday traditions can be very important to many people on their birthdays. To make your loved one feel extra special you can also try some of these Kazakh birthday traditions.

Life Chapters

In Kazakhstan, a person’s life is divided up into 12-year stages. After every 12 year period of life, the person steps into a new chapter of their life. The first 12 years of life is childhood so the first chapter is from birth to age 12. Then the second chapter of life will begin from ages 13 to 24 and so on.

Mushel

The year of your life where you transition between life chapters, e.g. the time between age 12 and 13 is known as a mushel. This time is very important and it’s believed that you shouldn’t do anything negative during this time as if you do this will project negative vibes into the next 12 year period of your life.

At the end of the mushel year, it is a tradition to thank destiny for allowing you to pass the mushel and so you will give someone important in your life a gift from your own belongings.

Traditional Food

Kazakh people often eat traditional foods on their birthdays such as besmarmak, a traditional Kazakh dish made of noodles and horsemeat.

1st Birthday

A baby’s 1st birthday is a special event and comes with a special ceremony. As the baby will now be ready to take their first steps, Kazakh people hold the ceremony known as tasau kesu or ‘cutting of the bonds’.

The baby’s legs are tied together with a rope in a figure of 8. This rope symbolizes the invisible rope that binds a baby’s legs to prevent them from walking. The rope is then cut by the parents.
