What Alphabet Does Hungarian Use?
The Hungarian alphabet is a version of the Latin alphabet with a few variations of letters.
It is written from left to right.
How Many Letters Are There In The Hungarian Alphabet?
There are 40 natural letters in the Hungarian alphabet.
The extended alphabet contains 44 letters, however the 4 extra letters q, w, x and y are very rarely used. These letters were added for use in foreign words but do not occur naturally in the Hungarian language.
Written Hungarian commonly uses lots of accent marks above letters. These change the pronunciation of the letter.

They have a free Hungarian alphabet course that will teach you to recognise the Hungarian letters and the sounds they make.
It’s really interactive and gradually introduces all the letters slowly so you have time to consolidate them all. There’s also plenty of opportunities to practice what you’ve learnt.

Worksheets and workbooks are especially good for learning how to write Hungarian letters. If you want to be able to read and write in Hungarian then try out some of these resources.
Reference Book
If you’re looking for a book that goes into lots of detail then try ‘Complete Hungarian’. It’s a great reference point that covers the alphabet in lots of detail and gives lots of examples so you can truly master the Hungarian alphabet.
