Bulgarian Numbering Rules

Like in many languages, there are some rules when it comes to the numbers in Bulgarian.

Knowing these rules will help you to learn the numbers and work out the name for other numbers not listed here.

Numbers From 11 – 19

To form the teen numbers from 11 to 19 in Bulgarian, you just need to add the word на (na) to the end of the digit and then follow this with the word for 10 десет (deset).

For example, 4 in Bulgarian is четири (chetiri) so 14 is четиринадесет (chetirinadeset). It’s made up of 4 + на (na) + 10.

The only exceptions to this rule are 11 and 12, these vary a little in spelling so make sure you check them in the list above.

Tens Numbers

Forming the tens numbers, e.g. 20, 30, 40 etc, in Bulgarian is easy.

The tens are formed by adding the word for ten which is десет (deset) to the end of the digit.

For example, 3 in Bulgarian is три (tri) so 30 would be тридесет (trideset).

The only exception is 20, there is just a slight change in the spelling of the number 2. On it’s own 2 is две (dve) but the number 20 is двадесет (dvadeset).

Compound Numbers From 21 – 99

Forming compound numbers between 21 and 99 in Bulgarian is super easy.

To form one of these numbers, start with the ten number, add и (i) then follow with the digit.

For example, to form the number 27 you would do 20 + и (i) + 7 so 27 is двадесет и седем (dvadeset i sedem).

Hundreds Numbers

To form the numbers 200 and 300, you take the digit and follow it by the word ста (sta).

For example, 200 would be 2 + ста (sta) so двеста (dvesta).

To form all other hundred numbers e.g. 400, 500, 600 etc, the rule is slightly different.

To form these numbers, start with the digit and follow it with стотин (stotin).

For example, 500 would be 5 + стотин (stotin) so петстотин (petstotin).

Compound Numbers From 101 – 999

You can easily form larger compound numbers in the hundreds in Bulgarian such as 299, 412, 567, 876 etc.

Start with the hundred number, followed by the ten number, add и (i) and end with the digit.

For example to form the number 299 you would do 200 + 90 + и (i) + 9, so 299 is двеста деветдесет и девет (dvesta devetdeset i devet).

When forming the numbers between 100 and 109 where there is no ten number, the и (i) comes just before the digit so 101 is сто и едно (sto i edno).
