Samoan Numbering Rules

Like in many languages, there are some rules when it comes to the numbers in Samoan.

Knowing these rules will help you to learn the numbers and work out the name for other numbers not listed here.

Numbers 11 – 19

As you can see in the list above, forming the numbers from 11 – 19 is super easy.

You just combine the word for 10 which is ‘sefulu’ with the numbers from 1 – 9.

E.g. 2 is ‘lua’ so 12 is ‘sefululua’.

Sometimes you may see compound numbers written with an extra word ‘ma le’ just before the final digit. This word means ‘and the’ but it is usually omitted, especially in speech.

E.g. you may see 12 written as ‘sefulu ma le lua’ which means ‘10 and 2’.

Tens e.g. 20, 30, 40 etc

To form the tens numbers which are 20, 30, 40, 50, 60, 70, 80 and 90 all you need to do is put the number from 1 – 10 in front of the word for 10 which is ‘sefulu’.

E.g. 3 is Tolu so 30 is ‘tolusefulu’.

Other Compound Numbers

To form other compound numbers such as 23, 45, 67, 89, 96 and so on we just join together the ten number and the number from 1 – 10.

E.g. 30 is tolusefulu so 33 would be ‘tolusefulu tolu’.

Hundreds e.g. 200, 300, 400 etc

To form the hundreds numbers which are 200, 300, 400, 500, 600, 700, 800 and 900 all you need to do is join the number from 1 – 10 with the word for hundred which is ‘selau’.

E.g. the word for 8 is ‘valu’ so the word for 800 is ‘valu selau’.

Numbers Past 100

For any other numbers past 100 such as 106, 234, 567, 783, 890 etc., you just join together the word for the hundred and the word for the ten and digit.

E.g. to say 237, you join together the word for 200 which is ‘lua selau’ and the word for 37 which is ‘tolusefulu fitu’. Therefore 237 in Samoan is ‘lua selau tolusefulu fitu’.
