Tongan Numbering Rules

Like in many languages, there are some rules when it comes to the numbers in Tongan.

Knowing these rules will help you to learn the numbers and work out the name for other numbers not listed here.

Numbers From 11 – 19

The teen numbers from 11 to 19 are easily formed in Tongan by simply joining the word for 1 which is ‘taha’ with the single digit.

For example, to say 19 you need to join 1 (taha) with 9 (hiva) so 19 is ‘taha hiva’.

Tens Numbers

You can also easily form the tens numbers in Tongan such as 20, 30, 40, 50 etc.

To do this take the single digit and follow it with the word for 0 which is ‘noa’.

For example, for the number 30, you need to join the number 3 (tolu) with 0 (noa) so 30 is ‘tolu noa’.

Compound Numbers From 21 – 99

Forming all other compound numbers from 21 to 99 is super easy in Tongan.

All you need to do is join the single digits together so if you learn the numbers from 1 – 10, you can already say all numbers all the way to 99 with no additional words!

For example, to form 26 you just need the number 2 (ua) followed by the number 6 (ono) so 26 is ‘ua ono’.

There are only a couple of exceptions to be aware of 22, 55 & 99. The pronunciation changes slightly to avoid the words being repeated.

  • 22 – uo ua
  • 55 – nime nima
  • 99 – hive hiva

Hundreds Numbers

Forming the hundreds numbers in Tongan e.g. 200, 300, 400, etc is also simple.

Start with the digit and follow with the word ‘ngeau’.

For example, to form 500, you start with 5 (nima) and follow with ‘ngeau’ so 500 is ‘nima ngeau’.

Compound Numbers From 101 – 999

You can also easily form larger compound numbers in Tongan such as 234, 456, 678, 987 and so on.

Similar to other numbers in Tongan, forming these numbers is as simple as joining together the individual digits.

For example, to form 482, just join the words for 4 (fā), 8 (valu) and 2 (ua) together so 482 is ‘fā valu ua’.

Another example is 111 where you simply say 1 (taha) three times so 111 is ‘taha taha taha’.

The only ones you need to watch out for are the hundred and tens numbers e.g. 110, 120, 130 etc. Start these with the word for 100 (teau) and follow with the word for the ten number.

For example, for 120, you say 100 (teau) then follow with 20 (ua noa) so 120 is ‘teau ua noa’.

For the numbers from 101 – 109, join 100 (teau) with the single digit e.g. 101 is ‘teau taha’.
