Colors In Greek – How To Name And Pronounce The Colors

This post covers how to say and pronounce the different colors in Greek.

Learning the colors is super important as it allows you to accurately describe things, expand your conversations and understand others better.

So what are the colors in the Modern Greek language?

The main colors in Greek are listed below.

Note: all of the above colors are in the neuter gender. 

As you can see from the above list, there are two different words for white. These can be used interchangeably and are both very common.

Greek Color Genders

Some of the colors (not all) have genders so when using colors as adjectives, you may need to use a different version of the word.

Some colors do not change because they are actually non-Greek words that have been adopted into the language.

The colors that don’t change are:

  • Blue
  • Pink
  • Purple
  • Orange
  • Brown
  • Beige
  • Grey
  • Turquoise
  • Khaki 

The other colors do have different versions for different genders. 

The key thing to remember is the endings:

  • Neuter colors end in -o
  • Masculine: replace the -o with –ος
  • Feminine: replace the -o with –η

For example:

  • White – άσπρος, άσπρη, άσπρο (aspros, aspri, aspro)

The only exception to the above rule is the color light blue/cyan:

  • Light blue/cyan – γαλάζιος (masc.), γαλάζια (fem.), γαλάζιο (neuter) (galazios, galazia, galazio)

Shades of Colors in Greek

To describe different shades of colors in Greek, you can use the following words:

Simply place the word for light or dark before the color to indicate that it is either dark or light.

For example:

  • Light pink – Ανοιχτό ροζ (Ah-neek-toh roz)
  • Dark green – Σκούρο πράσινο (Skoo-roh prah-si-no)

Color Questions

To ask what color something is in Greek, you can say:

  • What color is it? – Τι χρώμα είναι αυτό; (Ti kh-roh-mah ee-neh af-toe)

To say what color something is, you can say:

  • It is… – Είναι… (Ee-neh…)

For example:

  • It is red – Είναι κόκκινο (Ee-neh kok-ino)

Simply say είναι + (color) to say ‘it is (color)’. 

Another question relating to colors that you may be asked is:

  • What is your favorite color? – Ποιο είναι το αγαπημένο σου χρώμα; (Pyoh ee-neh toh ah-gap-ee-meh-no soo kh-roh-mah)

You can answer by saying:

  • My favorite color is… – Το αγαπημένο μου χρώμα είναι το… (Toh ah-gap-ee-meh-no moo kh-roh-mah ee-neh toh…)

Just follow this sentence with your favorite color.

For example:

  • My favorite color is yellow – Το αγαπημένο μου χρώμα είναι το κίτρινο (Toh ah-gap-ee-meh-no moo kh-roh-mah ee-neh toh kit-rino)
