Fijian Numbering Rules

Like in many languages, there are some rules when it comes to the numbers in Fijian.

Knowing these rules will help you to learn the numbers and work out the name for other numbers not listed here.

Numbers 11-19

Forming the numbers from 11 to 19 is super easy. You just take the word for 10 which is ‘tini’, add the word ‘ka’ and then follow with the digit from 1 – 9.

For example, 2 is ‘rua’ so 12 is ‘tini ka rua’.

Tens Numbers

Forming the 10s numbers e.g. 30, 50, 70 in Fijian is easy too. Just take the digit from 1 – 9 and follow it with the words ‘saga vulu’.

For example, 3 is ‘tolu’ so 30 is ‘tolu saga vulu’.

Compound Numbers From 21-99

Forming all other compound numbers from 21 to 99 is easy too e.g 43, 45, 67, 89, 95.

Start with the ten number, follow with ‘ka’ and then add the digit from 1 – 9.

For example, 50 is ‘lima saga vulu’ and 7 is ‘vitu’ so 57 is ‘lima saga vulu ka vitu’.

Hundreds Numbers

The hundreds numbers are 100, 200, 300, 400, 500, 600, 700, 800 and 900.

To form a hundred number, simply take the digit from 1 – 9 and follow this with the words ‘na drau’.

For example, 6 is ‘ono’ so 600 is ‘ono na drau’.

Compound Numbers From 101 – 999

Forming compound numbers in the hundreds is the easiest thing to do!

All you have to do is join the hundred number with the ten and digit.

For example, 100 is ‘dua na drau’ and 33 is ‘tolu saga vulu ka tolu’ so 133 is ‘dua na drau tolu saga vulu ka tolu’.

The only exception is the numbers from 101 to 109. For these you’ll need to add ‘ka’ before the digit. For example, 101 would be ‘dua na drau ka dua’.

These numbers may seem long at first but you’ll soon get used to forming them.

Now you should be able to say the numbers in Fijian from 1 all the way to 1,000!
